The FSSE survey asks each faculty member how much time students are expected to spend preparing for a selected course and how much time students actually spent preparing for their course. The table below presents the responses by subject area and by faculty who teach upper versus lower division courses.

The student-reported data represent first-year and senior responses to the NSSE 2006 survey regarding how much time they reported spending preparing for class. As in previous years, faculty members expect students to study nearly twice as much as students actually reported. Faculty members in the Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Biological/Life Sciences expected more per class study time than other subject areas. The bar graph below is yet another way to illustrate this point.
